I'm new to UCL and am concerned about making friends - is art society the right place for me?Absolutely! Part of our purpose is to facilitate new connections between students from all disciplines, ages, and backgrounds. At least one committee member will be present at every event and will always try to foster a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Our society is a safe place, you can introduce yourself and will always get a friendly response.
-
Do I have to be good at art to join? No! Every level of ability is welcome to come and give things a go. It's not about what you make but the fact that we all can make things together.
-
I'm a serious artist in your society - are there any opportunities for me?Brilliant - we are trying to grow a commissions group of serious working artists. You can join our facebook group and / or mailing list to receive updates on paid commissions, competitions and exposure opportunities.
-
Do you go to galleries together?Yes! We have a dedicated officer for Galleries and Events! Sometimes we even manage to get free tickets to exhibitions which we offer to our members.
-
Is this a univeristy society?Yes this society is for UCL students and associates. We generally do not run events open to the public and do not grant membership to anyone completely unaffiliated with UCL.
-
How much does membership cost?£6 for full membership, nothing for a remote membership.
-
What's the difference between a remote membership and a full one?The remote membership has been created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in an effort to connect students who otherwise may have been left out because they are not returning to campus. The remote membership allows you to participate in our online exhibitions, livestream events, commissions group, and online socials. The remote membership can be upgraded at any time to a full membership. The full membership gives full access to all of our events and access to our wealth of materials.
-
What does my £6 fee do?It allows us to run events at cost or a loss and build a bank of materials for low-cost access for members. This funding gives us the bulk-buying power to get materials for lower costs than individuals can.
-
How do I sign up for membership?Follow the link on our home page to our student union webpage. Here you can purchase a remote membership for free or the full membership by logging into your student union account. If you are new to UCL you can only do this once you have enrolled and have access to your UCL email account.
-
Can I join as an alumni?Under normal circumstances you can apply to be a member of the student union as an alumni here: https://studentsunionucl.org/visiting-associate-membership However, during COVID-19 the union have suspended most visiting / associate memberships. If you'd like to join free online activities we can arrange something for you if you email us at su-art.society@ucl.ac.uk

I am not at UCL but another London University, can I join?"Under normal circumstances you can apply to be a member of the student union as an alumni here: https://studentsunionucl.org/visiting-associate-membership However, during COVID-19 the union have suspended most visiting / associate memberships. If you'd like to join free online activities we can arrange something for you if you email us at su-art.society@ucl.ac.uk
-
What events do you run regularly? We run weekly lifedrawing and open studio sessions. We have socials approximately twice a term. We run paid oil painting courses, frequency dependent on demand. We run additional paid courses termly. Every year we hold an exhibition. We are also running a hybrid art course and some online events.
-
How much does this course / class cost? All prices and ticketing are viewable on the student union page for said event. If the event is a paid event and you cannot see a ticket link it is because the union are processing our ticket request form. We cannot use any other platform besides the student union website to sell tickets. (We can however use eventbrite etc if the event is free.)
-
I can't buy a ticket for this paid class? This is because of either of these issues: 1) The ticket hasn't been processed by the student union yet. You'll need to check the event page later for the ticket. If it's very last minute we'll also send out an email reminder when the tickets become available. 2) You have not registered for membership. Tickets for online activities will require you to either have a remote or full membership. Tickets for in person activities will require a full membership. Ensure you have the relevant membership before attempting to buy a ticket.
-
Where are you? I can't find the event? If there are last minute changes to a venue this will be posted in the facebook event. It takes 5 minutes for the student union event pages to update any changes so facebook is a better place to check. If you're still lost try messaging the activity leader (listed on the student union event page). If you're still lost don't panic! We'll try to answer asap! Our president has email notifications on so you can always try emailing su-art.society@ucl.ac.uk and she will try to text the activity leader on your behalf.
-
Can you share my competition / call for artwork with your members?Absolutely - we have a dedicated commissions group for our more serious working artists. Please fill out a commissions form and we will share the information with the relevant members. Please state if you want us to share more widely (e.g. if you want us to share an open call for all levels of artistic ability).
-
Can you share my work / organisation / event / etc with your members? Please visit our dedicated enquiries page and submit your request in the form provided. This ensures the relevant committee member receives your enquiry. We are open to sponsorship. We will only share events / organisations relevant to our membership unless part of a sponsorship deal.
-
Can our society collaborate with you?Absolutely! We are always open for collaborations and have a dedicated Outreach Officer, this year Louis, who handles these collaboration requests. To ensure your request is seen by the relevant committee member please fill in the form on our "Work with Us" page which can be found here.
-
Can I help out?Yes of course. You can stand for a committee position in our next election or visit the work with us tab and sign up to be a volunteer. We usually have a group of volunteers who help the committee set up for events, or help us manage events. If you are skilled in some particular artistic area and want to run a workshop just let us know. The form is here.
-
I'd like to run a class, can I?"At the moment we do not have access to a physical venue so can only run online classes for the forseeable future. If you have an idea for an online class feel free to pitch it to us! More likely than not we can arrange something - just fill out the enquiries form.
Can't find the answer to your question? Then email us by filling out the form below! We respond to email much quicker than social media messages.
